KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia is offering its streamyx GradPack package, which targets college and university students, until Dec 31.

Subscribers will enjoy broadband service at a lower rate, as well as receive some free goodies, according to the telecommunications giant.

GradPack offers two Internet service packages � 384Kbps (kilobits per second) for RM50 a month or 1Mbps (megabit per second) for RM100 monthly.

The students who subscribe will get a free modem, and a streamyx Zone ID which grants them wireless access at more than 1,300 hotspots nationwide.

TM is also waiving its RM75 activation and RM88 installation fees for GradPack users.

Also, subscribers of the 1Mbps package will get access to music portal Hypptunes, video service HyppTV and the Rose Online Evolution massively multiplayer online role-playing game for three months.

In addition to that, they will get a TM�Manchester United special-edition T-shirt for free.

Students who want to subscribe to GradPack must present their student ID at any TMpoint, TMpoint Authorised Dealership (TAD) outlet, or TM authorised reseller nationwide.

As consumers and providers alike are all to well aware, internet speeds experienced within metropolitan areas far exceed that of speeds experienced within rural parts of the country.

With super-fast broadband, or ADSL+2 scheduled for roll out next year, some predict the divide is only going to widen.

Predictions show that people living in rural areas could even activate streamyx account waiting decades before they experience speeds close to that of their metropolitan counterparts.

As mentioned, next year, BT plans to implement its 'next generation' ADSL (ADSL+2) which promises speeds of up to 24Mbps.

As with the current broadband situation though, your average speed will depend greatly on how far you are from your nearest BT exchange. And for some rural residence, this can be hundreds of miles.

Rural consumer concerns not only lie with the speed that they receive though, but also the extra cost they have to pay.

"There is a growing digital divide as people in built-up urban areas are able to take advantage of cheaper broadband and 'free' line rental, while those in the country are left languishing on lowyat streamyx expensive packages" said Michael Phillips from Broadbandchoices.co.uk.

Web Woes

Britain's industrial revolution, which took place over 200 years ago, transformed us from a local to a national economy, a rural to an urban society and a small-scale producer to a mass producer. The internet revolution has similar transformational potential, allowing, as it does, both large and small businesses to reach new customers and markets across the globe.

Around one billion people are now connected to the internet, representing 89% of global GDP, and internet companies like Google, Amazon, eBay, Expedia and Wikipedia Streamyxcom exploited the global reach of the worldwide web to turn established business models on their head. These companies came out of nowhere and have achieved massive success, but, says Nikesh Arora, Vice-President of European Operations at Google, there is no reason why existing bricks and mortar players in those markets couldn't have seized the online opportunity first.

"What the internet has demonstrated very powerfully is that no industry or business Streamyx Mail afford to believe it is established any more, because small players will come from left field and steal its market," says Arora. The internet is not going to go away. "Around 250 million people now access the internet through broadband, and that number is expected to reach 413 million by the end of the decade.
